This home jersey was worn by Kershaw in the Civil Rights Game honoring Jackie Robinson at Dodger Stadium April 15th, 2015 and is Autographed by Sandy Koufax and Clayton Kershaw. MLB Authenticated - Hologram EK316650. Clayton Kershaw, left-handed starting pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, is a three time Cy Young Award winner as well as 2014 National League MVP. He was the seventh overall draft pick in 2006 and was the youngest player in the MLB during his debut in 2008.
Sandy Koufax, former Los Angeles Dodger, is considered one of the greatest left-handed pitchers of all time. Sandy was voted most admired athlete of the century. Sandy threw out the first pitch at the 2015 All-Star game and was voted by the MLB fans as one of the four greatest living baseball players.
There is a strong comparison between Sandy and Clayton because of their success throwing left handed. The strong relationship is apparent as Sandy presented Clayton with his Cy Young award in New York last year.
The number on this Autographed jersey, 42, is in honor of Dodger great Jackie Robinson and Sandy walked Mrs. Robinson to the mound at this year?s game.
Kershaw's Challenge began in 2011 with a little girl named Hope, a very evident need in her life, and the realization of a platform to do great things. Today, Hope is 13 years old. She was born in Lusaka, Zambia, and has battled with HIV her entire life. Ellen Kershaw met Hope when she was 9 years old. At the time, Hope was a vulnerable orphan, sick and malnourished, and was accustomed to surviving on the streets. The two instantly connected. Ellen and Clayton committed that summer to make life better for Hope by sponsoring her through a ministry organization--providing food, education and medication.
In December of 2010, Clayton traveled to Zambia for the first time. After years of seeing pictures, Clayton was in disbelief at the depth of poverty. He met Hope. Though the funds through sponsorship were making a difference, Hope was still lacking one critical need: a safe place to call home. This need--this little girl--was the beginning of Kershaw's Challenge.
Coming home, Clayton and Ellen had the vision of building a home for Hope and children just like her. Clayton came up with the idea of "Strikeout to Serve" during the 2011 baseball season—donating per strikeout to make the home a reality. In 2012, Kershaw's Challenge expanded to support organizations in Los Angeles and Dallas in addition Zambia.
In December of 2012, the first 8 children--including Hope--moved into the Arise Home. For the first time, they had beds to sleep in, a loving family of brothers and sisters, nurturing house mothers to tuck them in at night, full bellies everyday, and a private school education. 2015 is an exciting new season for Kershaw's Challenge. We will continue our work in Los Angeles, Dallas and Zambia. For the first time, we will expand our efforts into the Dominican Republic.
Kershaw's Challenge is committed to transforming the lives of children in America, Africa and the Dominican Republic. Our goal is to partner with organizations that are committed to this as well. We aim to empower others to join our cause in unique ways - creating their own challenge or joining Clayton in his challenge. Since 2011, Kershaw's Challenge has given away over 1.8 million dollars to underprivileged children like Hope. Together with our supporters and beneficiaries, we long to make life better for children worldwide.
